DRAWING DEVICE IN FLIGH es el proyecto final del curso ART IN FLIGHT impartido por Olga Diego en la Universidad de California en Merced.
Invitada por la decana Jill Robbins, ambas conformaron un proyecto que pretendía mezclar Arte, Ingeniería e Implicación Social.
El resultado fueron seis meses de intenso e interesante trabajo con estudiantes de la UCM y con la población local de Merced.
Dos eventos públicos (JellyFish Tank y este Drawing Device), dos exposiciones (MAC y UCM Art Gallery), participación en Art Hop y diversas conferencias conformaron el proyecto.
El evento final que aquí se muestra tuvo lugar en el área del lago Yosemite, contiguo al campus universitario.
Lanzamos al cielo un gran artefacto de vuelo construido en plástico translúcido.
La implicación del público local consistió en la realización de dibujos y escritos sobre el mismo plástico. Les pedimos que pensaran ideas sobre vuelo, o ¿qué significaba para ellos volar? Cualquier persona podría participar. Todo el mundo estaba invitado.
Después, nosotros haríamos volar sus ideas. Pondríamos sus dibujos en el cielo, porque las piezas de plástico donde ellos dibujaron, iban a ser las partes que compondrían nuestro artefacto de vuelo. Bueno: en realidad ya no era solo nuestro, era de todos los que participaron. El proyecto se construía y tomaba forma con la implicación de todos.
Las acciones de dibujo duraron varios días. Ofrecimos nuestras piezas de plástico en diferentes lugares de la ciudad y del campus universitario. Estuvimos en la feria local de arte donde la participación de público fue increíble.
De esta manera se consiguió envolver tanto a la comunidad local como la universitaria en un mismo proyecto. Tal vez un poco loco, pero realmente interesante y emocionante.

DRAWING DEVICE IN FLIGHT is the final project of the ART IN FLIGHT course taught by Olga Diego at the University of California in Merced.
Invited by the dean Jill Robbins, the project aimed to mix Art, Engineering and Social Implication.
The result was six months of intense and interesting work with students of the UCM and with the local population of Merced.
Two public events (Jelly Fish Tank and the Drawing Device In Flight), plus two exhibitions (at MAC and at the UCM Art Gallery) and participation in Art Hop as well as several conferences formed the complete project.
The final event that is shown here took place in the Yosemite Lake area, adjacent to the university campus. We launched into the sky a large flight device made of translucent plastic.
The implication of the local public consisted in the realization of drawings and writings on plastic. We asked them to think about ideas about flight, or what did it mean for them to fly? Anyone could participate. Everyone was invited.
Afterwards, we would make their ideas fly. We would launch theirs drawings in the sky embedded in the device. Well, actually it was not only theirs, it was of all those who participated. The project was built and took shape with the involvement of all.
The action of participation of the public to draw lasted several days. We offered the plastic in different places of the city and the university campus. We were in the local art fair where the participation of the public was incredible.
In this way it was possible to involve both the local community and the university community in the same project. Maybe it was a little crazy but it was really interesting and exciting.
